Residents supplied from our Swan Reach and Waikerie Water Treatment Plants may notice changes in the taste and/or smell of their tap water.
The water is safe to drink and testing throughout the area and at the treatment plant shows the water fully complies with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
We expect customers in the following areas may notice this change: Barossa, Barmera, Yorke Peninsula, Waikerie and some areas of the Mid North.
The changes are due to an algal bloom present in some areas of the River Murray, a common event in warm summer months. This is causing a naturally occurring compound called geosmin, which can affect water taste and odour, but is harmless to health.
We have made changes to our treatment processes at Swan Reach and Waikerie to minimise the impact, and expect the smell and taste of water supplied to our customers to return to normal in the next few days.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us on 1300 SA WATER.
