Most of South Australia is arid or semi-arid with only four per cent receiving more than 500mm of rain each year, making it the driest State in Australia. The River Murray, which drains about one seventh of Australia, enters the sea in South Australia and is the State’s only major river.
Despite the harsh climate, South Australia contributes more than 10% of Australian agriculture. It is also the centre of the Australian wine industry with large centres of grape production in the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Riverland.
The capital city of Adelaide enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and cool mild winters. It is world renowned for the arts, food and wine and a sought-after destination for international conferences and education.
