SA Water has a commitment to providing development opportunities for young South Australians who wish to seek employment in the water industry. Work experience programs are an integral part of many courses both a secondary school and within the tertiary education sector. They comprise a structured range of activities provided by a host organisation to enable a student to experience firsthand the fundamental aspects of a particular job and to complete their course requirements.
Vocational (Tertiary) students
Vocational work experience opportunities within SA Water are limited to those students who require practical work experience in order to complete their tertiary course requirements (eg. students with an engineering discipline). The placement is usually for the period deemed essential to successfully complete the tertiary qualification, generally 12 weeks. During the period, the student is a paid employee of SA Water. Most vocational placement opportunities occur during the summer period (November to February).
Secondary students
This involves short term work experience as part of an endorsed school program. Placements are generally from one to two weeks duration. The student is not an employee of SA Water and there is no remuneration. A written Work Experience Agreement is signed by the school, the student, their parent, and SA Water before the work experience commences.
