  • Sewer blockage or overflow

To report a service difficulty in the Adelaide metropolitan area only, please contact: United Water on 8381 0300.

Why has my water bill/water usage increased?

Each year you receive four accounts from SA Water. Because SA Water only reads your meter twice a year, only two of your accounts will include charges for water usage. Details of your water consumption and previous usage are detailed on your account.

You should look carefully at each of your accounts to see if your water consumption has suddenly increased.

Higher than normal water usage can be due to many factors such as dry weather conditions, wastage (dripping taps, leaking pipes and faulty toilet cisterns), an increase in the size of the family or increased lawn and garden plantings, as well as the introduction of automatic sprinklers, evaporative coolers, dishwashers and automatic washing machines.

In most cases these factors are the reasons for high usage rather than incorrect meter readings or inaccurate meters.

If you are not satisfied that you have used the amount of water recorded by your meter, you may apply for the meter to be tested. However, a fee will be charged for the test if the meter is found not to be running more than 5% fast.

SA Water’s sophisticated customer services computer system routinely monitors your water accounts and if it detects a sudden unusual increase in your water consumption we will notify you as soon as possible so that you can carry out any necessary repairs or modify your consumption.

If you are still unsure about your water usage, meter readings or water use charges please call us on 1300 650 950.

The price of water is set by the State Government and announced in December each year.  The reason the prices are announced in December is that customers’ water usage is recorded by what is known as the “consumption year” not by the financial year. Customer’s consumption years can commence between December and June depending on SA Water’s meter reading program.

Regardless of when their bill is sent out all customers are billed for a total of twelve months consumption at the price set for water each year. According to the Waterworks Act 1932, the water consumption rate (the water use charge) for a financial year is determined for water used in the consumption year that ends in that financial year.

For instance, a customer with a consumption year from March 2008 to March 2009 will be charged the water use charge set for the 2008-09 financial year for water used in that consumption period. Accounts for water use reflecting the new price are not sent to customers until after 1 July each year.

The South Australian Government has announced an overhaul of the billing system. More information will be provided in the near future.
