In 2006 SA Water and the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide launched a special project; the SA Water Mediterranean Garden.
SA Water encourages the sustainable use of water and this garden is a practical example of water being used wisely and well.
This beautiful garden showcases plants from the five Mediterranean climatic zones:
The plants that live in these places are well adapted for climates like southern South Australia: seasonally dry, with mild climates and frequent fire. Many of these plants have features that enable them to conserve water during dry times and take advantage of the rain when it falls.
In the SA Water Mediterranean Garden you will not only discover the diversity, resilience and beauty of these plants, but you will marvel at the forms that enable them to survive and thrive in their Mediterranean landscapes.
Water is a central feature of the SA Water Mediterranean Garden, where its presence is celebrated in the design of the central water rill and where its absence is notable by the use of water wise plants from around the world. The SA Water Mediterranean Garden is an excellent and inspiring example of water used wisely and well and while the garden is newly planted it is nevertheless easy to imagine how beautiful it will be once the plants reach maturity.
