As part of history week 2010, SA Water is running the school and community learning program Toilets Through Time: History of South Australian Sewers. For more information about this program please see the SA Water Brain Wave.
In conjunction with Toilets Through Time, we are offering South Australian students in years 6 to 12 the opportunity to enter the SA Water Design a Loo of the Future Competition.
Around the world, methods of waste collection have varied throughout history. Some examples include:
- Ancient Roman public toilets with long multi-person benches and running water channels underneath to carry the waste away
- chamber pots and night cartmen
- long drops
- septic tanks
- modern flushable toilets
- sewer networks and wastewater treatment plants
- waterless urinals
How do you think our methods of waste collection and disposal might change in the future? How might a future toilet function?
Tell us your ideas and WIN!
