In response to the challenges of increasing energy demand and our need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, SA Water is committed to effective energy management.
We are one of the largest energy users in South Australia and a major focus of our energy management strategy is to actively participate in the mandatory Australian Government’s Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program. The EEO program requires large energy using businesses to assess their energy use to identify and evaluate cost effective opportunities for improving energy efficiency. Since we first registered for the program in 2007, representative energy assessments have been completed on our operational activities that consumed more than 80% of our total energy consumption. The three operational activities using more than 80% of our total energy consumption are water transmission, wastewater treatment and water distribution.
During 2008 we completed a representative assessment of the water transmission system which consists of four major pipelines and fourteen major pumping stations. In 2009 we completed an assessment of our wastewater treatment, recycling and disposal activities which include twenty-three wastewater treatment plants throughout South Australia. An assessment of the water distribution system was completed in 2011.
The SA Water Energy Efficiency Opportunities Public Report 2011 provides a summary of our achievements to date including:
The opportunities identified and implemented through the EEO program have significantly contributed to our energy and carbon reduction targets.
