SA Water - Environment - Save Water - Environment Improvement Program

Overview of Wastewater and the Environment Improvement Program

Every year, we treat around 95,000 megalitres (95,000,000,000 litres) of wastewater at our four plants serving metropolitan Adelaide.

In 2004, SA Water completed our $240 million Environment Improvement Program. The aims of the program were to:

  • Increase the effectiveness of our metropolitan wastewater treatment plants
  • Reduce the amount of treated wastewater entering Gulf St Vincent
  • Recycle high quality treated wastewater for irrigation purposes

In this section of our website you can find out more about the individual projects at:

  • Bolivar - which has resulted in high quality treated wastewater being piped to vegetable growers on the Northern Adelaide Plains.
  • Port Adelaide - which is eliminating discharge of treated wastewater to the Port River.
  • Glenelg - where treated wastewater is being used to irrigate parks and will be used for the Glenelg to Adelaide Park Lands Recycled Water Project.
  • Christies Beach - which is providing treated wastewater to the wine growing region of McLaren Vale.
