The Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant has recently undergone a $31million upgrade as part of SA Water’s $240 million Environment Improvement Program.
The upgrade, which involved the introduction of an innovative biological process known as Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) will reduce nutrients discharged from the plant into Gulf St Vincent by up to 70%.
Environmental benefits from the Glenelg Environment Improvement Program have been achieved through:
§ Reduced nitrogen concentrations in the treated wastewater
§ Reduced odours
Some wastewater from the plant is recycled to irrigate areas in Adelaide’s coastal suburbs.
