With the introduction of the Code of Practice for Irrigated Public Open Space (IPOS) in 2008 it is possible for individual sites to maintain 'fit for purpose' sports ground or recreational areas while working towards maximum water efficiency.
IPOS was developed in conjunction with a range of industry professionals to provide a best practice guideline for the management of turf. By adopting the IPOS principles, a site will be afforded the flexibility to manage water use efficiently against the base irrigation requirement that is appropriate to maintain turf health to a ‘fit for purpose’ standard.
After applying for and being granted an IPOS permit, SA Water will provide you with an indication of the base irrigation requirement for your site which can be used across multiple nights of the week after 8.00pm in the evening and before 8.00am the following morning, and as determined by the climate and your site conditions.
Under Water Wise Measures, all irrigated turf areas with a cumulative total of greater than 5,000 square metres irrigating with SA Water's supply require a permit. To apply for a permit please download the IPOS Permit Application form (see application forms below) and submit it to SA Water. Expired permits can be renewed by submitting the IPOS Renewal Application form (see application forms below).
Establishing new turf areas outside of the current irrigation timeframes are subject to a permit. To request a permit for establishing new turf download the IPOS New Turf Application form (see application forms below).
