Up to one fifth - or 70 gigalitres - of Adelaide’s annual total water use will be saved through a multi-million dollar strategy to water proof the city.
In 2003, Premier Mike Rann unveiled the State Government’s plan to join four local metropolitan councils in Adelaide’s north and south in developing the most progressive and effective water saving system in Australia.
More than $150 million in State and Commonwealth funding is likely to be spent on Water Proofing Adelaide, with millions of dollars in additional funding to be allocated for projects in the north and south.
“Though the State Government’s 20-year Water Proofing Adelaide strategy, and with state and local government uniting on a series of water proofing projects, we will set Adelaide up to guarantee our water supply into the future and save this very precious resource,’’ Premier Rann said.
