Christies Beach EIP
The Christies Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southern suburbs of Adelaide has recently undergone a $12 million upgrade as part of SA Water’s $240 million Environment Improvement Program.
The upgrade, which involved the introduction of an innovative biological process known as Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) will reduce nutrients discharged into the Gulf St Vincent from the plant by up to 70%.
Environmental benefits from the Christies Beach EIP have been achieved through:
-
Reduced nitrogen concentrations in the treated wastewater;
-
Decreased outflow of treated wastewater to the sea
-
Reduced odours
-
Reduced demand on Willunga Basin groundwater by providing an alternative source of water available for irrigation.
