Construction of the $60 million Bird in Hand wastewater treatment plant upgrade is well under way, with preliminary earthworks complete, new structures taking shape on site and work starting on a new recycled water pipeline.
The upgraded plant will implement a new mechanical based wastewater treatment process, replacing the lagoon system that has treated wastewater from Lobethal, Woodside and Inverbrackie since 1965. The upgrade will provide a sustainable long-term treatment facility for the area, catering for predicted growth for the next 25 years. It will also create benefits for the local Dawesley Creek and surrounding environment.
A new recycled water pipeline will enable recycled water to be transferred between the treatment plant and surrounding properties, connecting customers along the route to a source of treated wastewater for use in irrigation. The pipeline route was designed to service customers who responded to a call for registrations of interest in the recycled water supply, whilst minimising impacts on vegetation.Since 1965, wastewater from Lobethal, Woodside and Inverbrackie has been treated at the Bird in Hand wastewater treatment plant located along Bird in Hand Road, Woodside. The plant uses a ten lagoon system to treat the wastewater by a natural process before discharging into Dawesley Creek.
The timeframes:
- Structures and site works – substantially completed end June 2011
- Recycled water main – completed early May 2011
- Mechanical installation – completed end June 2011
- Electrical installation – substantially completed mid August 2011
- Plant commissioning – started August 2011
It is anticipated that the new wastewater treatment plant will be operating by the end of 2011.
