In 2008, SA Water developed a Long Term Plan for the Eyre Peninsula's public water supply to ensure demand can be met for the next 25 years.
In line with the recommendations of the Long Term Plan, SA Water is focussing on desalination as the preferred water security option for the region and has accelerated investigations. Initially five preferred locations were identified.
Research was undertaken to assess ocean mixing and currents, aquaculture, water depths, geotechnical conditions, environment, power supply and proximity to water infrastructure.
Following this research and considering community views, two preferred areas for the potential construction of a desalination plant have been selected for further detailed assessment. These areas are Cathedral Rocks and Sleaford Bay.
SA Water has started rigorous investigations into these areas including an assessment of marine and terrestrial ecosystems and further consideration of social, economic and technical factors related to desalination.
Further consultation is being undertaken with key stakeholders in the region, local land owners and indigenous heritage groups.
It is anticipated these investigations will be completed by the end of 2011.
