The Eyre Peninsula Pipeline delivers treated River Murray water to SA Water customers between Kimba and Lock. This project will help ease the pressure on the groundwater basins which currently supply water to Eyre Peninsula.
As of 30 June 2007, water from the Morgan-Whyalla pipeline is being supplied to the Eyre region.
The pipeline has the capacity to supply up to 1.4 gigalitres of water to Eyre Peninsula annually, which is 0.7% of the water SA Water extracts from the River Murray each year. No extra water is being extracted from the River Murray to supply the Eyre Peninsula – the water is being purchased from licenses that are already operating. Water which would have been used elsewhere along the river is being re-allocated to Eyre Peninsula.
The pipeline proposal was submitted after considerable social, environmental and economic analysis and was found to be the best option at the time.
Both River Murray water and groundwater are a similar colour, so those affected may not notice the difference in a glass or a bath - but may however notice a slight change in taste or odour.
