SA Water has undertaken investigations to improve the way fireplugs are identified, including a new marking system for the plugs to make them easier to recognise.
To develop the new identification SA Water undertook extensive consultation, including trials, with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS), Country Fire Service (CFS), Adelaide City Council, Office of Local Government, Local Government Association, Transport SA and the City of Salisbury.
The old identification used a white post with red cap. The new identification for metropolitan and country urban sites will be a blue reflective marker placed on the road surface, yellow painted fireplug lids and a solid yellow line painted along the edge of the road delineating parking restrictions.
A $2.8 million project is now being rolled out across South Australia to identify more than 130,000 fireplugs and make them more visible for fire fighters and easier to detect fireplugs linked to water mains.
The new design for metropolitan and country urban sites is a blue reflective marker placed on the road surface, slightly off centre, with the fireplug lid painted yellow and a solid yellow line painted along the edge of the road defining parking restrictions.
The new marking system will replace the white post and red cap marker and the installation has been completed.
