In February 2009 the State Government noted completion of the Kangaroo Island Water Infrastructure Long Term Plan. The long term plan aims to ensure that the drinking water supply system has sufficient capacity over a long term (30 years) to enable growth and development of the region.

Demand projections indicate there is a requirement to source additional water by 2016 to meet the Island’s future drinking water needs. Following a review of the existing drinking water system, a number of water security options were considered to ensure future water supply needs can be met. Constructing a water storage facility as a means of securing additional water from Middle River Reservoir was identified as the preferred option.

SA Water has commenced planning work associated with the project including identification of a suitable 20 hectare site adjacent Kingscote and obtaining the necessary approvals for the facility.

SA Water anticipates that subject to necessary approvals the water storage facility will be ready for use by 2012.
