SA Water provides water and wastewater infrastructure services at 18 indigenous communities in the State.
Following the successful completion of project work in 2003-05, the South Australian Department for the Premier and Cabinet Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division and SA Water entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The MOU requires SA Water to manage water and wastewater systems including scheduled services and water quality monitoring, emergency response to related incidents and new consumer connections. The program has also addressed the requirement to formalise and systematically implement a verifiable Management Framework to work towards the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG)
Water quality testing is conducted regularly for all major Indigenous communities in South Australia, with water samples collected every three months. These samples are tested at laboratories in Adelaide and Marla.
SA Water administers the routine servicing of infrastructure, much of which is undertaken by contracted providers with operations supported by local community employed officers. SA Water coordinates training initiatives to assist the operators through an annual program that includes course material delivered by a range of providers including TAFE. First aid and OH&WS have been included as well as a number of water quality and infrastructure management initiatives.
SA Water has also been engaged as the project manager for a number of capital works improvement projects funded by the Federal Government through bilateral agreement arrangements with the Department for the Premier and Cabinet.
Many projects have been successfully completed to date, with others planned or underway.
To keep you informed of our progress, SA Water has produced a publication called Water for Remote Areas.
