Since the 1870s, water was transferred from the Torrens Gorge Weir to the Hope Valley Reservoir via an aqueduct system. To replace the ageing aqueduct, a buried gravity assisted pipeline has been laid in the Linear Park.
The new pipeline starts approximately 800 metres from the Gorge Weir on the River Torrens and connects to the Hope Valley Reservoir via an existing tunnel. The project delivers on a major infrastructure project outlined in Water Proofing Adelaide and helps to secure a quality water supply for more than 85,000 households in Adelaide’s north eastern suburbs.
Construction started in May 2007 and the pipeline was completed and the reservoir started receiving water through the pipeline in June 2008.
We are continuing our work with the local councils to ensure the rehabilitation of the Linear Park is sustainable, reduces irrigation requirements and improves the future amenity of the park.
The aqueduct is being decommissioned in preparation for the transfer of the land to Planning SA, which will become the custodians of the 51-hectare reserve protected by the River Torrens Linear Park Bill.
