SA Water is reminding people that watering times will change from Sunday, 2 April 2005 to coincide with the end of daylight savings.
Public or private gardens, recreational areas, sports grounds or nurseries can be watered:
- by sprinklers — after 5pm and before 10am on any day
- by hand (through hand-held hose/bucket/watering can) at any time
- through a drip-feed irrigation system at any time
On the Eyre Peninsula, a watering system or sprinkler for gardens and lawns can only be used between 6pm and 8am. Buckets, watering cans and hand held hoses may be used at any time.
SA Water’s Chief Executive Anne Howe says Adelaide reservoirs are currently at 59% capacity
— 5% higher than at the same time last year – but we should not become complacent.
“We all need to do what we can to ensure we conserve water” Ms Howe said.
“We now have sensible, responsible measures in place and I urge people to continue using water wisely and adhere to the Permanent Water Conservation Measures.
“These measures relate to outdoor water use, but there are many things people can do to save water inside the house. These include checking on cisterns, pipes and taps and seeking the help of licensed plumbers to repair any leaks or drips.
SA Water, nurseries and local plumbers can provide information about Permanent Water Conservation Measures and waterwise tips for the home and garden.
Ms Howe applauded South Australians who are making a strong effort to reduce water use.
“In the first year of Permanent Water Conservation Measures we saw a great response from the public and an overall decrease in water consumption,” she said. “The abnormally dry 2005 autumn saw a sharp increase in water use so we want to make sure South Australia does all it can to save water for future dry spells.”
