SA Water’s extensive water treatment system now ensures high quality filtered water is supplied to 98% of all South Australians.
In 1986 the Morgan Water Filtration Plant began providing clean, treated water to communities supplied with River Murray water from the Morgan-Whyalla pipeline.
Another major improvement in regional water quality was achieved through a special partnership between SA Water and private sector company Riverland Water . This partnership led to the construction and operation of 10 treatment plants to supply filtered River Murray water to 100,000 people in regional and Adelaide Hills communities.
On Kangaroo Island, which faced a shortage of natural water sources, SA Water has built two treatment plants at Middle River and Penneshaw Penneshaw uses desalination to produce fresh water from the sea. Salt is removed in this process through reverse osmosis membrane technology to produce clean fresh water for the local community.
