When you unplug the bath or flush the toilet, stop and think where the wastewater goes.
Once it leaves your property, SA Water has a very important role in managing the collection, transportation and treatment of the wastewater.
Wastewater treatment is expensive and complex, but vital to our health and the health of our environment. There are 24 wastewater treatment plants in South Australia and these help reduce the level of pollutants entering our marine environment and provide treated wastewater for irrigation.
Wastewater is 99.9% water, with the remaining 0.1% made up of dissolved or suspended solids. Every day more than half the fresh water Adelaide uses is returned to sewers from household toilets, sinks, showers and washing machines. Added to this is wastewater from industries.
