Water Supply

SA Water delivers clean, safe water to more than 1.4 million customers. Our vast network of pipes, pumping stations and treatment plants delivers water from two main sources - the River Murray and reservoirs - to home across the State.

In an average rainfall year, about 60% of metropolitan Adelaide’s water comes from the Mount Lofty Catchment area. Additional water is pumped from the River Murray - and in dry years the river can supply as much as 90% of Adelaide’s water.

Many country regions of South Australia source water from groundwater and reservoirs. South Australia’s population is spread across the State and SA Water has delivered considerable expertise in managing and transporting water over vast distances.

There are 20 water treatment plants around the State and these ensure the water from rivers, catchments and reservoirs meets drinking water quality standards by the time it reaches your tap.
