The Board

SA Water has a board of seven directors. The directors are responsible for SA Water's performance.

The Board manages the direction of the corporation and monitors its performance. It also manages SA Water's Senior Leadership Team.

There are a number of committees that help our board to do its work. This includes managing our assets, auditing and setting staff pay levels.

Our Board of Directors meets monthly.

Who are our Directors?

SA Water's Board is led by a Chair, and has six non-executive directors. The Chief Executive of SA Water makes the seventh member of the Board.

Who: Lewis W Owens
Role: Chair of SA Water
Appointed: 2011

Lewis Owens

Lewis Owens is currently the Chair of the South Australian Water Corporation.

He is also:

  • Chair of Country Arts SA
  • Non-Executive Director of Regional Arts Australia
  • Non-Executive Director of Australian Gas Networks
  • Member of City of Marion Audit Committee
  • Member of SA Water Board's Customers and Regulation Committee and Human Resources Committee

Lewis has worked in a number of senior executive roles, including CEO of ETSA Utilities (now SA Power Networks). Other organisations include:

  • Funds SA
  • WorkCover Corporation
  • SA Independent Industry Regulator
  • Essential Services Commission of SA.

Lewis Owens was appointed a Reconciliation Ambassador in 2009.

Who: Sybella Blencowe
Role: Non-Executive Director
Appointed: 2008

Sybella Blencowe

Sybella Blencowe is a specialist lawyer, working in environment, planning, and government law.

She is also:

  • Member of the City of Adelaide Development Assessment Panel
  • Chair of the SA Water Board's Governance, Finance and Risk Committee

Sybella has held a number of governing roles. These roles have included:

  • Chair of the South Australian Forestry Corporation
  • Director of SAGRIC International Pty Ltd
  • Chair of the Abalone Fisheries Management Committee
  • Deputy Presiding Member of the Natural Resources Management Council
  • Presiding Member of the City of Marion Development Assessment Panel.

Role: Non-Executive Director
Appointed: 2015

Ian Stirling Profile Picture

Ian is a highly experienced director with strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills with excellent leadership and business acumen. He was Chief Executive of ElectraNet.

He is also:

  • Director and SA President of CEDA (Committee for Economic Development  of Australia)
  • Director of Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia
  • Director of Botanic Gardens of South  Australia Foundation
  • Member of the University of Adelaide Business School Advisory Board

Ian's previous roles have included:

  • Chairman of ESSA (Energy Supply Association of Australia) from 2012 to 2014
  • Deputy Chairman of Business SA from 2012 to 2014

Who: Sue Filby
Role: Non-Executive Director
Appointed: 2013

Sue Filby

Sue has particular expertise in customer service, funding strategies and proposals, performance standards, and stakeholder engagement. Her expertise has been recognised by major awards.

She is also:

  • Member of the Development Policy Advisory Committee
  • Facilitator of Behind Closed Doors  .

Sue's previous roles have included:

  • Member of the Energy and Water Industry Ombudsman Board
  • Member of SA Financing Authority Advisory Board, History Trust of SA Board
  • Member of Flinders Medical Research Institute Advisory Board
  • Member of the Urban and Regional Development Advisory Committee
  • Member of the Hills Transit Board
  • Member of the Rural Solutions SA Board (Primary Industry and Resources SA)
  • Member of the Real Estate Institute Professional Standards Committee.
  • General Manager Customer Relations, SA Power Networks.

The awards that Sue has won include:

  • SA and National Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award for the private and corporate sector (2007)
  • Executive of the Year Service Excellence Award (SA), Customer Service Institute of Australia (2012).

Who: Hon Carolyn Pickles
Role: Non-Executive Director
Appointed: 2013

Hon Carolyn Pickles

The Honourable Carolyn Pickles was a member of the Parliament of South Australia from 1985 until 2002. During that time, she was held a number of roles, including:

  • A member of the Legislative Council (until 2002)
  • Government Whip
  • Chair of the Industries Development Committee
  • Chair of the Social Development Committee.

Carolyn has held a number of governance roles. Some of these have included:

  • Membership of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Board
  • Deputy Chair of the ASO Board
  • Chair of the Child and Youth Health Board
  • Chair of the Board of Children, Youth and Women's Health Service
  • Membership of the Health Performance Council.

Carolyn is currently a member of the ASO's Concert Hall Committee. She is also the elected Chair of the Board of the Foundation of the State Library of South Australia.

Who: Hon Karlene Maywald
Role: Non-Executive Director
Appointed: 2014

Hon Karlene Maywald

The Honourable Karlene Maywald has extensive experience in the area of water policy development and reform. She was appointed Chair of the National Water Commission from 2012 to 2015. She is most noted for her significant contribution to the management of the Murray Darling Basin, and setting the direction for long-term water security in South Australia.

Karlene is currently the Managing Director of Maywald Consultants, and holds positions on a number of Boards. She is also a facilitator of Behind Closed Doors.

Karlene was a member of the House of Assembly in the South Australian Parliament between 1997 and 2010. She served as a Cabinet Minister from July 2004 until March 2010. Her portfolio responsibilities included:

  • The River Murray
  • Water Security
  • Small Business
  • Regional Development
  • Consumer Affairs
  • Science and Information Economy.

Who: Roch Cheroux
Role: Chief Executive of SA Water
Appointed: 2016

Roch Cheroux CE

Roch was appointed CE of SA Water on 1 July 2016.

He has 25 years’ experience in the water industry. This includes design, construction, financing and operating activities, as well as holding numerous executive management positions.

Roch comes to SA Water from his role as CEO with SUEZ Singapore where he was in charge of all South East Asia activities.

Previous roles include:

  • CEO of SUEZ - Degrémont in Australia and New Zealand
  • Managing Director of United Utilities Australia
  • Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, of Tallinn Water
  • Roch has also served as a member or chairman on a number of boards in Australia, Asia, the UK, the Netherlands, Estonia and other European countries.
