The small community of Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island has no local natural fresh water sources. We had to find a way of getting drinking water to the town.
The answer was to build a desalination plant. The plant turns seawater into fresh drinking water using reverse osmosis technology. The next-stage uses UV light to further disinfect the water. The by-product, saline concentrate, is discharged through a diffuser system, which helps to protect the environment.
The plant has been operating since 1999 and its current output is about 300kL of fresh water per day.
