Water Industry Traineeships involve working outdoors. Sometimes this work is in remote locations and challenging conditions. Traineeships can be in metropolitan or regional locations. They run for 24 months.

A Water Industry Trainee performs a construction and maintenance role within a team. They help to ensure high standards of water and wastewater services are delivered to customers in the local region.

What sort of work will I do?

As a Water Industry Trainee you will:

  • Repair and maintain water and wastewater infrastructure. This includes pipes, water tanks, sewer mains and treatment plants.
  • Perform meter-reading and changeovers.
  • Respond to emergency bursts.
  • Operate pumps and valves for bulk water transfers.
  • Undertake land management duties. This includes fencing and vegetation control.
  • Maintain dam assets. This includes inspection and monitoring. The assets you will look after include reservoir dam walls and equipment.

What will I study?

You will complete a Certificate III in Water Industry Operations as part of your traineeship. This is a unique qualification that will help you to establish a career in the water industry.

Subjects you will study include:

  • Environmental and licensing procedures.
  • Operating minor plant and equipment.
  • Operating and maintaining basic flow and regulating devices.
  • Computerised information and systems.
  • Using plans, drawings and specifications.

Who can apply?
