Support for customers impacted by bushfires

Support for customers impacted by bushfires

With bushfires having a significant impact on communities across South Australia, we are providing a range of support options to help our customers and property owners as they focus on their recovery efforts.

Support may include:

  • bill payment extensions
  • account adjustments so customers are not charged for water used to prepare and defend properties or water lost through leaks in pipes damaged by bushfires.

Customers with queries about their bills, or who need additional support, are welcome to call us on 1300 SA WATER (1300 729 283).

If your private water tanks or storages need to be replenished, there is a process available to help:

Drinking water

If your private water tank was accessed by the CFS to assist with firefighting purposes, you can commence the process to have this replenished by filling out the CFS essential water replenishment form available on the Department of Human Services’ Kangaroo Island fire recovery web page, or by calling the CFS directly on 08 8553 4446.

Property owners with water tanks that were not accessed by the CFS and need a normal top-up, can book a drinking water delivery through one of the local private water carters:

  • KI Water Supplies – 0477 005 350
  • John Barrett – 0419 166 827
  • Gavin Bates – 0433 485 548

Non-drinking water

  • If you need immediate water for livestock troughs a total of 500 kilolitres of water has been set aside in a tank at SA Water’s Kingscote depot for small farm vehicle and trailer tanks to come and draw from on weekday mornings between 8 am and 12:30 pm. To access this free service call 0428 105 377.
  • If you have an existing arrangement with Kangaroo Island Council to access a standpipe, normal access is available from standpipe locations on the Middle River network, and from the standpipe on Cape Willoughby Road (near Freycinet Way) in Penneshaw.
  • More guidance on non-drinking water storages or dams on your property is available from PIRSA’s website or by calling 08 8297 2299.

Bushfire ash and debris can affect the quality of rainwater tanks, and while SA Health advises this does not present a health risk, it can impact colour, turbidity and taste. SA Health advises that if rainwater smells, tastes or looks unusual, you should assume it has been contaminated and take steps to clean and refill your tank. Consider using the water for watering a garden. Visit SA Health’s website for more information on reducing the potential for and removing contamination from rainwater tanks. Although there is generally no need for water quality testing to confirm contamination in this situation, you can speak to our team in the Australian Water Quality Centre on 08 7424 1514 for further advice on the types of water quality testing available.
