Wirrina water supply and Yankalilla District sewerage services

The District Council of Yankalilla currently owns and operates the wastewater management services in the Yankalilla district as well as the drinking water supply network servicing Wirrina.

The Council has been working with us to secure the future of these services, and we have reached in-principle agreement for us to assume ownership, operation and maintenance for the drinking water supply for Wirrina and sewer networks across the district.

Having reached in-principle agreement for us to assume ownership, operation and maintenance for the Council’s owned services - Wirrina’s drinking water supply and sewerage services in the Yankalilla district - it’s timely for us to outline the customer benefits of our proposal.

Customer benefits

We will use our expertise to operate this water network efficiently to best deliver safe, clean drinking water and remove and treat your used water and sewage. We will invest to upgrade the drinking water supply network in Wirrina and the sewerage network across the district.

As an SA Water customer, you will benefit from:

  • state-wide pricing for safe, clean drinking water plus a commitment to keep prices as low and stable as possible
  • a reliable service supply that meets or exceeds all relevant public health and other regulatory requirements
  • ongoing system upgrades and maintenance as a part of our standard program of works
  • a 24/7 customer care response in the event of temporary supply interruptions, and
  • access to support in the event you need help managing your bill payments.

Sewerage services

Our quarterly charges for the removal and treatment of sewage and used water are based on property values as determined by the Valuer-General, currently 36.95 cents per $1000 for country residential customers.

As an SA Water customer it is likely that most residents will pay less than their existing sewerage service rates. Some people may experience an increase, and where this appears likely, we will be in touch with you directly.

Drinking water supply proposal

Our proposal to own, operate and maintain the drinking water supply to the Wirrina community is much more cost effective than previous proposals.

Property owner contribution

Wirrina property owners will need to make a financial contribution. This one-off payment towards upgrades so we can best deliver safe, clean drinking water to you is:

  • $4,000 per housing allotment (including vacant land)
  • $2,000 per apartment.

Wirrina businesses will also be required to make a financial contribution on a pro-rata basis.

To upgrade the network and take on the long term management of this service, we need a majority of property owners to make this payment up-front.

Payment will be required when we assume responsibility for the network. This is expected to be from 1 January 2019. Please remember that SA Water residential customers may access payment support.

Please note

The property owner contribution amounts detailed above are only available to those people who become an SA Water customer at the time we assume responsibility for the water supply service. For anyone who becomes an SA Water customer after this time, the contribution price will increase at 5 per cent per annum.

Property owners can choose to remain a customer of the Council, with the current rate structure in place, mindful that for the majority of residents these rates are significantly higher than our state-wide pricing.
