Grand Junction Road main replacement complete

SA Water has completed the installation of 1380 metres of new water main under Grand Junction Road in Oakden.

The works are part of an annual state-wide pipe replacement program, which aims to reduce the risk of bursts and leaks and improve reliability of supply to customers.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said crews have been working hard over the past several weeks to safely complete the project on Grand Junction Road, while ensuring a minimal impact on commuters.

“Works were scheduled overnight, which is what we try to do where possible, for all water main upgrades on arterial roads,” Mark said.

“For this project, we also used a pipe installation method known as horizontal directional drilling, which requires significantly less excavation, and therefore a smaller section of road surface is disturbed.

“We understand roadworks can be inconvenient, and so put a lot of planning in place to ensure we don’t interrupt people from going about their day to day lives, more than we need to.”

The local community was given advanced notice and regular updates about the works, including those who were without water during part of the upgrade.

“A minimal number of necessary water outages were scheduled, for no more than a few hours at a time, and these were coordinated with local businesses,” Mark said.

Before this section of water main under Grand Junction Road was upgraded, it had experienced several bursts and leaks over the past 12 months.

“This was the key factor in prioritising the pipe for replacement, to make sure we avoid further incidents like this from occurring,” Mark said.
