Morgan still proud of its product, despite not claiming national water accolade

Water produced from SA Water's Morgan Water Treatment Plant has narrowly missed out on taking out the title of 'Australia's best tasting tap water' at a Water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA) competition in Launceston today.

A panel of water industry experts and members of the local community judged five samples from across the country and presented Mount Kynock water the top gong, which is produced by the Toowoomba Regional Council in Queensland.

SA Water’s Morgan Water Treatment Coordinator James Gorman said it was disappointing the results didn't go their way, but they can still leave knowing the water produced at Morgan is safe, clean and great tasting.

"Our team is small but they're committed and work hard every day to treat and deliver water to our customers," James said.

"Obviously it would've been better to take home the award, but I'm sure we'll put our hat in the ring again next year and will be even more determined to take the crown from Queensland!"

The national winner will now go on to represent Australia in the international competition held in the United States in early 2018.

Samples entered into today's competition were taken from water treatment plants at Mount Stromlo in the Australian Capital Territory (Icon Water), Mount Kynock in Queensland (Toowoomba Regional Council), Merrijig in Victoria (Goulburn Valley Water), Morgan in South Australia (SA Water) and through the Lake Fenton Scheme in Tasmania (TasWater).

"There was definitely a bit of friendly rivalry between the water operators today, but it was actually really great to meet my interstate counterparts, taste their water and share our experiences," James said.

The Morgan Water Treatment Plant has been operating since 1986 and is one of 43 SA Water-managed water treatment facilities across the state.

The plant sources and treats water from the River Murray, and last year, it produced nearly 30 billion litres of water, which is around 40 per cent of what was supplied to the whole of regional South Australia.

A sample from the Morgan plant will be included in SA Water's blind water taste test (Take the Tap Test) being held in Rundle Mall in the Adelaide CBD this Friday.
