Take a bow Butch and Wayne sign off after nearly 100 years of service

SA Water marked the end of a near century-long era when team members Brian ‘Butch’ Butcher and Wayne Hollitt retired after almost 50 years of dedicated employment each.

Wayne and Butch, who are both District Leaders, were recently farewelled by their colleagues who toasted their service and friendship.

Proud of their achievement, the dynamic pair progressed their careers over five decades with Wayne based out of Murray Bridge and Butch working at several locations, from Yorketown to Woodside, before settling in Bordertown.

The duo’s supervisor, Field Services Manager, Borjana Stazic-Mandic said having two team members building and sustaining impressive careers for almost 50 years had made her consider the secret behind the their long-term dedicated service.

“Both men have a great work ethic and have taken on new challenges, learning new skills to develop personally and professionally,” Borjana said.

“It has been a real privilege to work with such devoted employees.

“Field Services East has lost almost 100 years of experience and knowledge with Wayne and Butch’s retirement - they will be sorely missed.”

The two men started working for SA Water in the 1960s and took different paths from construction to maintenance, progressing their careers and experience before becoming District Leaders.

Their roles saw them responsible for each district’s operations team by planning and coordinating maintenance, repairs and investment to maintain a high quality water supply to local homes and businesses.

Butch – the longer-serving of the two – said, “I’ve worked everywhere for SA Water and every time I moved forward, so did my career.”

“I’m so grateful to my wife Judy and children Nigel and Megan, who’ve followed me on this journey over the years,” Butch said.

With the almost 10 decades collectively under their belts, Wayne and Butch are both looking forward to a well-earned retirement and spending more time with their families.

Wayne has sailed off on a round-the-world cruise, while Butch, whom colleagues describe as hard working with a heart of gold, is relocating from Bordertown to Crystal Brook to be near family and friends. He plans to keep busy improving his golf game and working for his local footy club as a volunteer.
