We are always improving what we do and how we do it, using leading technology to move with the needs of our changing society and best manage the systems and infrastructure that support delivery of water and wastewater services.
Smart water network technology
We have advanced smart water network technology in key locations in metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia. This enables us to identify and proactively fix a number of fault types before they affect our customers or inconvenience commuters. It has been recognised in international water innovations awards.
Smart technology also allows us to detect sewer pipe blockages to prevent overflows both inside and outside homes.
We use aerial drones to give our Network Operations team a birds’ eye view of water and pump station conditions. Fitted with cameras, the drones offer an alternative way to inspect assets and collect information while minimising health and safety risks, and saving us time and money.
Specialised pipe cameras
Bore water pipes and infrastructure inspections are required when the water quality declines or there is a decrease in yield from a bore, and we now send down specialised camera equipment to perform our inspections. By using this technology we have increased our own capabilities, which has reduced our outsourcing costs.
Spray lining trials
The spray lining technique uses a specially-formulated material that lines the interior of a pipe. The liner, which lasts for 50 years, increases the structural integrity of a water main without it having to be replaced. Spray lining offers significant benefits to our customers and community because it removes the need for excavation work and therefore minimises both traffic and community disruptions and the costs associated with mains replacement.
The ROVer (a Remotely Operated Vehicle) is a mini robotic submarine equipped with high definition cameras. We use it to capture high-definition images and video of underwater structures, such as parts of a weir, reservoir or water storage. One of the ROVer’s benefits is it can be operated from a trailer away from the water’s edge. This provides a safer and more efficient alternative when the additional skills of divers aren’t required.
A change from chlorine to chloramine
We have been gradually changing our methods of cleaning and treating drinking water in some systems away from chlorine to chloramine, which is becoming world-standard in water supply. This started some years ago in the Riverland, and several of the state’s regional drinking water networks already supply chloraminated water, including from Morgan, Keith, Bordertown and Swan Reach. In fact, more than 220,000 South Australians currently enjoy water treated by chloramine.
This change to chloramine overcomes water quality challenges presented by the source water and long pipelines in our networks, as well as producing a better tasting water. Our customers tell us that chloraminated water tastes better: in fact, tap water produced at our Morgan and Woolpunda Water Treatment Plants has won best tasting South Australian tap water in previous year years. Chloraminated tap water is also a favourite during our own blind taste tests.
The Fleurieu Peninsula will be the next to experience chloraminated drinking water from the Myponga reservoir, which is already enjoyed by the residents of Myponga Township.
There may be an impact to aquatic pets when systems change to chloramine, as fish and other living aquatic creatures are sensitive to chloramine, so if you need specific advice on the most appropriate product for your situation please contact your local pet shop or aquarium retailer. We’re improving your services and undertaking maintenance work in Windsor Gardens. Sometimes our crews need to temporarily interrupt the water supply to our customers and/or manage traffic while they are working. Temporary traffic management may remain in place until reinstatement of the impacted road is complete. We always aim to minimise inconvenience by restoring services as safely and quickly as we can.
