Traineeships
Our traineeships provide hands on experience in maintaining, repairing and operating water and wastewater infrastructure, while also providing a solid foundation for building a rewarding, long-term career in the water industry.
The traineeship program develops foundational skills and knowledge through structured learning and real work assignments, supports understanding of how different parts of the SA Water connects, and enables trainees to contribute to team tasks while building confidence and capability.
While completing a traineeship, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of how to maintain, repair and operate our water and wastewater services. You’ll be studying and working for 24 months, working in metropolitan or regional areas.
We currently offer two types of traineeships:
- Water Industry traineeship.
- Business Administration traineeship.
What you’ll work on
As a Water Industry Trainee, you will get opportunities to:
- Respond to emergency breaks
- Assist with the operation and maintenance of water networks
- Support fault response, routine maintenance, and repair activities
- Participate in excavation, trench work, and basic land management tasks
- Work safely in a range of environments, including confined spaces and outdoor conditions
- Represent SA Water in a respectful and professional manner when engaging with the community
- Attend scheduled training, complete required assessments, and actively participate in learning and development
- Follow safety procedures and contribute to a positive, safety-focused team culture.
What you’ll study
Your hands-on qualification will help you establish a career in the water industry.
You’ll study subjects including:
- Environmental and licensing procedures
- Operating minor plant and equipment
- Operating and maintaining basic flow and regulating devices
- Computerised information and systems
- Using plans, drawings and specifications.
As a Business Admin Trainee, you will be provided opportunities to:
- Respond to emergency breaks
- Perform meter-reading and changeovers
- Repair and maintain water and wastewater infrastructure, including pipes, water tanks, sewer mains and treatment plants.
- Operate pumps and valves for bulk water transfers
- Work outdoors, in remote locations and sometimes challenging conditions.

How to apply
To be eligible for our water industry traineeships you must have a current driver’s license and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or have an appropriate working visa. There are no age limits for applying for our water industry traineeships.
