Stormwater drains

Stormwater drains

Stormwater drains are not managed by SA Water — they are the responsibility of your local council. This means we don’t install, upgrade or maintain stormwater infrastructure.

If you see stormwater drains overflowing during or after rain, please contact your local council to report the issue.

What is stormwater?

Stormwater is rainwater that runs off surfaces like roads, driveways, footpaths and rooftops. It flows into street gutters and then enters council-managed stormwater drains, which direct the water away to help prevent localised flooding.

How is stormwater different to recycled water?

Recycled water is wastewater that has been collected and treated at one of our wastewater treatment plants. While it’s not suitable for drinking, it can be safely used for:

  • Irrigating parks and public green spaces
  • Flushing toilets
  • Watering gardens

Recycled water helps reduce demand on the drinking water supply by providing a sustainable option for non-drinking uses.
