Get your skates on to Goodwood’s new waterhole

Rolling up for a free refill – and many have literally rolled – from SA Water’s new outdoor drinking fountain at the Goodwood Community Centre has helped avoid more than 500 single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill, since it was switched on last month.

The fountain has been visited by nearly 1,000 users and delivered around 300 litres of safe, clean tap water to the centre’s diverse community groups including ballroom dancers, roller skaters and Bonsai enthusiasts.

City of Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson said the new fountain was a welcome addition to the popular community hub.

“We are thrilled to secure one of the new SA Water drinking fountains for an area that is frequented by children, families and visitors with a range of interests,” Mayor Hewitson said.

“The latest addition of SA Water’s fountain builds on our council’s efforts to stem the rising tide and cost of plastic waste and encourage environmentally friendly practices.

“Their modern and accessible design and ease of use is helping our community reduce costs and protect our natural environment.”

Designed and manufactured in Australia, a low-lying drinking arm bubbler on the side ensures the fountain is child and wheelchair accessible, while an in-ground, foot-operated dog bowl keeps furry friends hydrated.

SA Water General Manager Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said the fountain enables a healthy habit while the community is out and about.

"Having fountains in prominent community hubs and parks is an excellent opportunity for us to promote the many benefits of tap water – it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your health, your wallet and the environment," Anna said.

"With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, we’re working to provide convenient places to refill and help South Australians continue leading the way in reducing plastic waste.

“We’re aiming to inspire sustainable behaviour and it’s rewarding to see our fountains enjoyed by the community.”

The City of Unley joins a growing network of councils and venues across the state, including Adelaide Oval and Adelaide Showground, who are partnering with SA Water to install 30 smart fountains.
