Helping Uniting Country SA flush out nits

Around 140 children from the Port Augusta region have so-far received free head lice treatments at Uniting Country SA's Itchy Emu Clinic as part of an initiative supported by SA Water's Community Partnerships Program.

Operating every Thursday and Friday, the clinic tackles the problem of nits through a chemical-free treatment and fun educational program to help inform parents and school-aged children on how to treat their own hair.

SA Water's General Manager of Communications and Engagement Anna Jackson said the project aligned with the corporation's vision for delivering world class water services for a better life.

"Around one third of the average household's water use is in the bathroom, and plays a vital role in protecting health and well-being in households and communities," Anna said.

"It's exciting to know that our $7,500 community funding has helped the service continue to reach more school children and families in the Port Augusta area, and most recently, a visit to the Tji Tji Wiltja Preschool at Flinders Children’s Centre.

"Uniting Country SA is among 17 recipients of funding as part of the 2018 Community Partnerships Program, and with applications for this year's program now open, we look forward to continuing our community involvement right across South Australia in 2019."

Manager of Uniting Country SA’s Communities for Children Program Heather Eglinton said the clinic's success has seen the addition of a volunteer haircutting service free of charge.

"We're really pleased at the numbers of children and parents accessing this important service, and how much it has assisted in breaking down the stigma surrounding head lice," Heather said.

"Our partnership with SA Water and other community groups like the Port Augusta Rotary Club demonstrates how the community can come together to recognise and respond to an ongoing issue and make a real difference to families and children in our local community."

SA Water invites organisations to apply for the 2019 Community Partnerships Program with applications now open. The program offers a maximum of $10,000 in funding to events and programs run by not-for-profit organisations that help demonstrate how water contributes to a better life in their community.
