New fountain flows in Summit Park

Residents and visitors to Mount Barker now have an alternative to buying bottled water while out and about, with the installation of a new drinking fountain.

Located at Summit Sport and Recreation Park on Springs Road, the fountain provides a convenient spot for people to fill up their reusable bottles for free, while taking in a game or exploring the area.

SA Water's General Manager of Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Nicola Murphy said increasing community access to drinking stations like this makes it easier for people to choose tap water over bottled water, saving money and reducing plastic waste.

“Summit Park is a popular destination for those out exercising or playing sport, especially in the summertime and it’s important visitors and locals have a source of safe, clean drinking water to stay hydrated while out in the sun,” said Nicola.

“Having fountains in prominent community hubs and parks is an excellent opportunity for us to promote the many benefits of tap water – it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your health, your wallet and the environment.

“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, we’re working to provide convenient places to refill and help South Australians continue leading the way in reducing plastic waste.

“We encourage everyone to keep a reusable drink bottle handy when you're out and about and to top up on tap water instead of buying it."

Designed and manufactured in Australia, the drinking fountain will accommodate the different needs of the community, with a waterspout that is child and wheelchair accessible.

The fountain also includes a ‘water window’ to allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles, a splash guard to limit direct mouth contact with the nozzle and is fitted with a dog bowl to quench your pet’s thirst.

SA Water and local councils have more than 1000 drinking fountains located across the state and you can find your local by downloading SA Water’s free BYOB app through the appstore or google play store.
