Night sky mural makeover for Murray pump house

A glimpse of the sparkling night sky has been cast onto SA Water’s water pump house along the River Murray at Swan Reach, transforming the structure into a starry mural of Australia’s only dark sky reserve.

The pump house, measuring five metres high and six metres wide, now displays artwork of the river glistening under the stars, along with bold images of the region’s iconic birds – including the Australian Pelican, Blue Wren, Mallee Ringneck and Laughing Kookaburra.

SA Water’s Manager of Brand and Community Marketing Kellie McDonald said the mural is a wonderful way to celebrate the uniqueness of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

“The reserve’s ‘core’ – which is the zone meeting the minimum criteria for sky quality and natural darkness – happens to be located in the Swan Reach Conservation Park and we’re thrilled to capture the beauty and marvel of this special place on our local infrastructure,” Kellie said.

“We picked this particular site for the mural following community feedback about the building’s aesthetics and given its prominence near the ferry terminal and local pub, there was a great opportunity to enhance the site’s visual amenity.

“Not only will locals get to enjoy the art, but its idyllic location along the riverbank will also get a few onlookers, from people travelling on the water.

“We’re proud to be partnering with artists and community groups to beautify our infrastructure across the state, helping bring a bit of colour to these concrete canvases while they keep performing their important roles.”

Jarrod Loxton, who is a renowned South Australian artist and has created murals across the state, said he was excited to be involved in this project and wanted to create a piece that represented the distinct River Murray environment.

“I’m truly ecstatic and thankful to be involved in such a fantastic community project that’s generated such a positive response and encouragement from locals during the painting process,” Jarrod said.

Murray River, Lakes & Coorong Tourism Development Manager Bill Nehmy said this latest art project is another great example of SA Water’s support for regional communities.

“Silo art is generally well known and has been a proven drawcard to towns and regions, supporting the visitor economy and community pride. It’s positive to see outdoor art is wider than just silo art, with this pump house a wonderful example by SA Water showcasing one of only 21 dark sky reserves in the world,” Bill said.
