Riverland local recognised for top leadership

It was the chance to be a leader that brought SA Water's Riverland District Leader Shaun Elphick up the River Murray.

Joining the business as a trainee ten years ago with stints in Woodside and Murray Bridge, Shaun was rewarded in 2016 with a leadership role in SA Water's field services operations in the Riverland and Mallee.

Just a few years into his role, Shaun's passion for the Riverland and his team has seen him recognised with the Inspirational Leadership Award in SA Water's first annual Innovation and Excellence program.

"My young family and I fell in love with the Riverland lifestyle straight away, and whether it is heading out fishing or swimming in the mighty Murray, it was clear to see how rewarding out crew at the depot find both living and working in such a tight-knit community," Shaun said.

"Coming to work every day in such a diverse and challenging role is extremely enjoyable, and to be recognised recently as an inspirational leader within the business is very humbling.

"Moving up from Murray Bridge was a big career step, but one that I’m certainly glad I took."

Shaun leads a team of eight operations and maintenance personnel who maintain SA Water's water supply distribution network across the Riverland and Mallee districts, including fixing leaks and breaks, installing new water mains and connecting new customers to the local network.

His development as a leader has seen him become a coach and mentor to his team, and Shaun is credited with building a positive workplace culture for others to build their professional skills and confidence.

"There's an amazing sense of community spirit In the Riverland, and I feel privileged to lead such a talented group of people working to make a positive difference for customers in the area," Shaun said.

Senior Manager of Customer Field Services Colin Bell said Shaun's recognition is well deserved, and a tribute to the mark he has left on his fellow team members over the last decade.  

"Shaun has developed into an inspirational leader for our people working in the Riverland, and his positive impact on SA Water and the wider Riverland community is clear to see," Colin said.

"We are very fortunate to have many highly-skilled people like Shaun working to provide our customers with world class water services right across South Australia."
