SA Water’s Pirku-Itya partnerships applications open

04-06-2026

South Australian not-for-profit organisations are encouraged to apply for funding through SA Water’s Pirku-Itya (Reconciliation Partnerships Program), with applications for 2026-27 now open.

Pirku-Itya, a Kaurna word meaning ‘for community’, was established in 2020 and supports grassroots events and projects that contribute to reconciliation and create positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across the state.

Over the past 6 years, SA Water has partnered with more than 30 organisations through the program, supporting initiatives that celebrate culture, strengthen community connections, promote environmental stewardship and foster greater understanding through reconciliation in action.

The opening of applications follows National Reconciliation Week and its 2026 theme, All in for Reconciliation, which calls on everyone to play an active role in building respectful relationships and creating a united future.

SA Water’s Manager of Brand and Community Connection Kellie McDonald said the annual program demonstrates the power of partnerships in advancing reconciliation outcomes across South Australia.

“Pirku-Itya is about bringing people together through meaningful partnerships that celebrate culture, strengthen communities and create opportunities for learning and connection,” Kellie said.

“National Reconciliation Week’s theme this year reflects exactly what this program is designed to achieve, that we are all working together to create positive change and lasting relationships based on respect, understanding and shared goals.

“Since 2020, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with more than 30 organisations across metropolitan and regional South Australia, supporting projects that showcase culture, care for Country and help communities learn from one another.

“We know there are many more organisations doing incredible work across the state, and we encourage groups with ideas that support reconciliation outcomes to explore the program and submit an application.”

Funding up to $10,000 per project or event is available for successful applicants. Eligible projects and events must support stronger communities through reconciliation-based activities and have clear link to water use, and SA Water’s vision of delivering trusted water services for a sustainable and healthy South Australia.

Previous Pirku-Itya partnerships have included cultural gardens, storytelling and arts initiatives, environmental restoration projects, educational programs and community events that celebrate Aboriginal cultures, languages and knowledge.

Applications are open to South Australian not-for-profit organisations that are Aboriginal owned or operated, or can demonstrate Aboriginal community relationships and outcomes that have a direct and positive impact for Aboriginal people.

Applications close 31 July 2026. For more information, eligibility criteria and application details, see the Pirku-Itya partnership page.
