Moonta local Norman Angie is taking confident steps toward a long-term career after joining SA Water in September as a water industry trainee.
The 27-year-old Yorke Peninsula man previously worked in Port Wakefield but found the distance challenging. Now, based closer to home in Kadina, Norman is thriving with the support of his team, mentors and SA Water’s commitment to cultural awareness and inclusive employment.
Norman is one of a growing number of First Nations trainees contributing to SA Water’s goal of increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment across all levels of the organisation.
Through its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Retention Plan, the utility is committed to creating a culturally safe and inclusive workplace, supporting long-term career development, and becoming an employer of choice for First Nations peoples.
“I feel like I’ve really found a place that is supporting me in a new career here,” Norman said.
“The support I’ve had from my team and my mentor Kenny (Wright) has made a huge difference. I haven’t had any previous experience with a mentor, so this is the first place that has given me that support.
“It has been a really good experience so far and I’m finding it really interesting what goes into the water industry, and getting taught on the job.
“I feel like I am listened to, and I like working with the crew who are really fun and have made me feel comfortable. Every day I’m learning something new, and I’m proud to be getting qualifications and skills I can use for life.
“I’d absolutely encourage other people to give it a go because it’s more than a job, it’s a place where you’re backed to succeed.”
Norman is supported by SA Water’s Aboriginal Employment Retention Adviser Kenny Wright who works closely with First Nations employees across South Australia to guide their development and help navigate challenges.
“Norman’s got a great attitude and a strong connection to the region, and he brings so much to the team,” Kenny said.
“Programs like this that offer strong support systems like mentoring, cultural connection and personal development allow us to create spaces where our Aboriginal employees feel valued and confident to grow.
“Having Aboriginal mentors and colleagues around builds a sense of belonging, and that’s the key to retention and success.
“This is how we build a workforce that truly reflects the communities we serve. At SA Water, we’re proud to offer more than just a job, but offer real career pathways and long-term development for all people.
SA Water’s Kadina District Leader Shane Whelan said Norman has quickly become a valued member of the team.
“He’s been an absolute asset to the crew, he brings a great attitude and a willingness to learn, which is fantastic,” Shane said.
“From day one he’s shown commitment and curiosity, and that’s exactly what we want to see in someone starting out in the industry.
“The whole team enjoys working with Norman and he’s always looking for new ways to grow, so it has been fantastic to see his confidence build each week.
“Bringing in diverse perspectives, especially from our Aboriginal communities, makes us stronger, and creates a better team dynamic and helps us all learn from each other.”
Norman became aware of the opportunities with SA Water through WorkSkil Australia, which connects job seekers with supportive employers and career pathways.
Now working across a range of field operations tasks based out of the utility’s Kadina Depot, Norman is deploying his existing skill set and gaining new qualifications.
He is also working towards gaining his manual car licence and truck licence, to boost his qualifications that already include front-end loader and forklift licences.
SA Water is committed to improving employment outcomes, guided by its Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan, which includes clear targets for Aboriginal employment, cultural safety initiatives and leadership development.
