Swell water partnership keeping SA beaches clean

Efforts to clean-up South Australian beaches, rivers and waterways are ramping-up thanks to SA Water’s exciting community partnership with local not-for-profit organisation Our Coast Our Mission.

Several SA Water employees recently joined a cast of keen environmentalists to collect debris and rubbish from the iconic Glenelg Beach while launching Our Coast Our Mission's new fabricated rubbish storage trailer provided through SA Water's Community Partnerships Program.

SA Water's General Manager of Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said the equipment will help thousands of volunteers make a positive difference.

"While looking after our natural environment and waterways is everyone's responsibility, we unfortunately still see millions of tonnes of rubbish and debris washing up on beaches around the world every year," Anna said.

"It is estimated that around 80 per cent of waste pulled from oceans is plastic, and with single-use bottles taking up to a thousand years to naturally break down, the work of groups like Our Coast Our Mission is vital to maintaining the health of Australia's waterways and marine life.

"Our partnership is a clear example of how working together can make a real difference to the natural environment, and it's great to see their new trailer being put to good use by so many dedicated people."

The organisation's events coordinator Dale Grimmond said the trailer is a welcome addition to the work done by its 8000-plus volunteers.

"Our clean up events allow us to have a positive impact on local communities and businesses by providing awareness and an understanding of the plastic pollution problems we face, with the hope that our volunteers and wider community make small but effective changes in their daily life," Dale said.

"Our new trailer allows us to have our clean up kit ready to deploy for upcoming events at both Henley Beach and Rapid Bay while allowing us to safely and responsibly remove the waste collected without needing the personal vehicles of our volunteers, and we're extremely grateful for SA Water's generous contribution."

SA Water's annual Community Partnerships Program provides financial or in-kind support for community groups and events using water, to foster a better life. For more information, visit sawater.com.au.
