Water main move to support King William Road renewal

To help facilitate the City of Unley’s redevelopment of King William Road, SA Water will relocate around 200 metres of water main under the Hyde Park strip, with work beginning on the night of Sunday 19 May.

To keep community impact to a minimum, the majority of construction will be scheduled overnight, allowing free flow of traffic and ‘business as usual’ for local traders during the day.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Customer and Community Engagement Matthew Bonnett said working with businesses in the area and understanding their individual water needs is key in planning SA Water’s part in this project.

“We have timed construction hours to avoid peak trade periods for local cafes and restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights,” Matthew said.

“We will also provide advance notice to businesses and residents who will experience temporary interruptions to their mains-supplied water for part of our works.”

“Similar successful water main replacement work along Jetty Road at Glenelg last year, demonstrates the value we place on incorporating local stakeholder feedback into project planning and design to minimise temporary construction impacts.”

SA Water will be moving a section of water main between Park and Boffa Streets from the eastern side towards the centre of King William Road. This is to enable the City of Unley to install new kerbing without damaging SA Water infrastructure, as well as allow the utility sufficient access to the water network for any future maintenance.

“Our water main relocation works will typically take place between 8pm and 6am from Sunday to Thursday,” Matthew said.

“During working hours, traffic will be reduced to one lane between Park and Boffa Street with temporary parking restrictions in place in certain sections. Buses will be able to run as normal along King William Road during the night and day.

“At the end of each night of construction, our contractors will lay a temporary bitumen seal over the excavated areas of road, so people can travel safely through the area during the day.

“Road reinstatement following the completion of our works will be coordinated with the council.”

The water main relocation is expected to take around one month to complete.
