Water main upgrade underway in Port Lincoln

21-08-2026

Work is underway to replace approximately 480 metres of water main in the heart of Port Lincoln as part of continued efforts by SA Water to improve water services for customers.

Commencing in mid-August, the upgrade involves the installation of new PVC pipe underneath sections of Dublin Street and Luke Street.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Peter Seltsikas said the works are part of the utility’s 4-year, state-wide $287 million water main management program.

“With a typical lifespan of around 100 years, this upgrade ensures we can continue to provide reliable water services to our local customers into the future,” Peter said.

“While it is difficult to stop all pipe leaks and breaks occurring due to environmental factors such as soil movement and weather, our proactive water main replacement program is just one way we can proactively seek to limit their frequency and impact.

“We prioritise water mains for replacement as part of the program based off a range of factors, including a pipe's history of leaks or breaks, impacts of these incidents on our customers and community, and even pipe condition trends.

“The pipe being installed is made from PVC, which is proven to be more flexible and resistant to movement than other pipe materials, such as cast-iron or fibre cement.

“For the safety of our people and the local community, we ask everyone to please take note of localised traffic management along sections Dublin Street and Luke Street while the works are being undertaken.

“We will also ensure our customers are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when we move their water connections over from the old to new pipes.”

Construction is expected to continue until late October, subject to weather conditions, with work typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

Some overnight work will be required along a section of Dublin Street, with this work taking place between 7pm and 6am.
