Middle River Reservoir

Middle River Reservoir

Immediately after the Second World War, the Soldier Settlement Scheme settled 170 new families on Kangaroo Island. The lack of a major, reliable water supply to support this community, became a concern. Then, between 1948 and 1962, the island's population doubled. The need for a reliable water supply became urgent.

Construction of the Middle River Reservoir, which is a dam on Middle River, was completed in 1968.

Capacity: 540 megalitres.

If this reservoir supplied the whole state, how long would this last? About 19 hours.

Area of water spread: 11 hectares.

Open to the public? No.
