New water main on the way for Arthurton

More than 500 metres of water main in Arthurton is set to be replaced over the coming weeks as part of efforts by SA Water to improve water services for local customers.

The project, which will replace pipes along Main Street between North Terrace and First Street, is part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to refurbish up to 375,000 meters of water mains across South Australia between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the new main will be made of PVC, which is more flexible and resistant to underground movement compared to cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“With the normal lifespan of new pipes reaching up to 100 years, this main replacement ensures our customers in the Arthurton area can continue to receive world class water services for years to come,” Mark said.

“Soil movement, environmental factors and the weather means we can’t completely prevent leaks from occurring in our pipes, but we are committed to reducing their frequency and impact on customers through main replacements like this.

“This is one of a number of main refurbishments we’re undertaking across regional and metropolitan South Australia this year, and we look forward to continue working with communities across the state to improve water services for our customers.”

The pipe replacement is expected to take around seven weeks to complete with works typically occurring between Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4pm.

“For the safety of our people and residents in the area, we ask drivers to please take note of any localised traffic management put in place while the works are completed,” Mark said.

“We will ensure local residents are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when their connections are moved over from the old to new pipes.”
