Paw your pup a drink at Port Elliot’s drinking fountain

Choosing tap over bottled water has been made easier for the Port Elliot community with the installation of a new drinking fountain.

Located In the Port Elliot Dog Park, the fountain provides a convenient and free way to refill your bottle and is fitted with a dog bowl to quench your pet’s thirst.

SA Water's General Manager of Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Nicola Murphy said the drinking station is providing a sustainable alternative to bottled water, saving money and reducing plastic waste.

“Port Elliot is a popular destination, especially in the summertime, and it’s important that visitors, locals and pets, have a source of water to stay hydrated while out in the sun,” said Nicola.

“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, where they take up to 1,000 years to break down, public drinking fountains can help stem the tide of plastics.

“It is important we promote sustainable actions and substitute single-use items for reusable choices wherever possible.

“By providing a simple replacement to bottled water, we hope that we will see more of the community choosing to refill, resulting in less plastic waste in the community.

“Residents are encouraged to keep a bottle handy when they’re next visiting the dog park and to top up on tap water instead of buying water."

Designed and manufactured in Australia, the drinking fountain will accommodate the different needs of residents and visitors with a waterspout that is child and wheelchair accessible.

The fountain features include its ‘water window’ to allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles and a splash guard to limit direct mouth contact with the nozzle.

SA Water has drinking fountains located all over South Australia and plans to continue installing more across the state.
