South East students set to tackle slippery stuff

SA Water is helping more than 1600 school students across the South East to celebrate National Water Week by splashing and sliding through a one-hour interactive science spectacular called Slippery Stuff.

Starting today and running through until Friday October 26, Slippery Stuff is an interactive educational show designed for students in grades three to seven.

Presented by David Lampard from That Science Gang, the show takes practical science directly into classrooms to teach students about the physical, chemical and biological processes used to treat drinking water and sewage.

Presenting at schools across Kingston SE, Millicent, Penola, Mil-Lel, Glenburnie, Allendale East and Mount Gambier, SA Water's Community Invesment Lead Consultant Emma Juricin said Slippery Stuff is part of the corporation’s ongoing commitment to teach children about important water issues.

"The session is a fun way to let students and teachers immerse themselves in the show and literally, hose-down myths about water," Emma said.

"The students get to learn important information about how the water cycle is managed, and the way science is applied in a real-life scenario to make sure South Australians can enjoy a safe, reliable and secure water supply."

The interactive show holds water for teachers too, aligning with the Australian Curriculum in the areas of Science, Geography and Sustainability.

The show has entertained more than 18,000 students since 2011, and this year is helping to kick-off celebrations for National Water Week. With the 2018 theme of 'Water for me, Water for all' National Water Week is celebrated every October to build awareness around the value of water and the protection of water environments and resources.

"The week encourages the community to think about how we use water on a day-to-day basis, and is a reminder of the 663 million-plus people globally without a safe water supply close to home," Emma said.

"The lack of access has a significant impact on lives, from individual and population health, right through to day-to-day management of work, education, food supply and preparation."

Slippery Stuff forms part of SA Water's extensive education program, which supports tours, workships and shows for school-age children across South Australia, including Follow That Drop, Poo-Do Gurus and Sustainability Challenge.
