Happy Valley geostop 8
A winding road – Geostop 8
Just like the shoreline, this path winds around. You’ll pass two waypoint posts before you see your next clue on the third. It’s easy to get distracted by the view; this walk is one of the trail’s longest stretches. When the path starts to closely follow the shoreline, you’ll be almost at your next clue.
Well done, you’re on the home stretch. You have now completed around half (4.21km) of your journey. Remember to keep hydrated as you follow the path back.
The reservoir reserve has one of the last remnants of the nationally endangered Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) Grassy Woodland on the Adelaide Plains .
In the early 1800’s there was approximately 20,000 ha of this woodland across the Mount Lofty Ranges. Today, the Happy Valley reservoir reserve supports 100 ha of the less than 2000 ha that remains (Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve Land Management Plan 2017 ).
The eucalyptus trees in these areas are seen as dark brown bark and often multi stemmed. Like other mature trees, they have wide canopies and often form natural hollows; providing the perfect habitat to support a wide range of native species. Conserving our woodlands is important to preserve the biodiversity of our native plants and animals that live in the reserve.
