Driving restrictions for Goolwa sand dunes
Certain areas of the Sir Richard Peninsula (Goolwa Beach) and Murray Mouth are off limits to vehicles and motorbikes. Prohibited areas are clearly marked with signage and barriers.
This area is home to fragile ecosystems, including a number of rare and endangered bird and plant species. The area is also culturally significant for the Ngarrindjeri people. Driving onto sand dunes disturbs these sites. Once this happens, sand starts drifting, making it very difficult for the sites to recover.
The area is patrolled by SA Water staff and a security company.
